During the past 10 years, it's an industry that has grown hugely. Alex enjoys sport and being around people so a glimpse into the career of an outdoor recreation leader is just what she's looking for. Heading first to Waitomo Adventures in the heart of Waikato, Alex is soon in the midst of an adventure herself, abseiling into the Lost World, which is just one of the 50 major cave systems to be found in the area. Scott , Alex's mentor for the experience, explains the physical challenges are just one aspect of the role. Often people are outside their comfort zone so there is definitely some psychology involved in helping people overcome their fears and achieve an adventure goal. After completing the caving section of the adventure, Alex is then off to the Sir Edmund Hilary Outdoor Pursuits Centre on the Central Plateau where centre manager Kieran gives her a lesson on climbing and stopping yourself on a snow slope. The physical aspects of an outdoor recreation leader's job are a given however they also need to master survival skills and everything from reading maps and compasses to understanding weather forecasts. This is a great career if you have a passion for adventure and love sharing that with others. Trevor Fitzell from John Paul College in Rotorua is keen to take a look at what's involved in being successful within Maori tourism. It's an industry with a long and illustrious history in Rotorua that dates back to the times of the Pink and White Terraces. The natural and cultural aspects of the region have continued to play an important role in Rotorua's successful tourism industry. First up Trevor meets Eden Doige, the operations manager for Tamaki Heritage Experiences, a successful company that hosts more than 100,000 people every year. Trevor's soon on the job and when the guests emerge from their meal, he explains how their food was traditionally prepared and cooked. Next he's off to Whakarewarewa and he gets more hands-on experience imparting his knowledge to visitors about the cooking pool. So far, his personality and ability to share information has been spot on and he's gained a real insight into the role of a tourist guide. At Te Puia: New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, Trevor goes behind the scenes of how this amazing venue, which attracts some 500,000 people every year, operates. He joins reservations manager, Piripi Inia, to learn how reservations link to all the other departments at Te Puia. The reservations aspect of the business ensures each tour group visiting is catered for as they require during their visit. As with many of the roles within Maori tourism, starting off as a guide is a great place to start before looking to specialise.
