If you like science, maths and dirt, then this could be the job for you! Charles from Mangere College finds out how these attributes are part of the role of a civil engineering lab technician. First up, he meets Curwin Boltman at the Fulton Hogan Auckland Laboratory and is off to observe a 'softening point' test -- or a test that indicates at what temperature bitumen on a road will soften. It's a crucial test because the consequences could be disastrous and expensive if a road is not made to last. Charles finds out quality control in lab testing is an important aspect of establishing how the materials will perform on site. It's not just road materials civil engineering lab technicians could be testing. Part of the role involves testing foundations which will have roads or structures built on them. So soil tests must be completed in the lab then the results supplied to the engineers who will then be able to ensure the level of compacting to support the structure is appropriate. It is again the job of the civil engineering lab technician to get out in the field and check the soil density and moisture following compaction. Charles tries his hand at completing this test. Lisa Tatafu-Puloka is in for a fascinating insight into how the some of the country's infrastructure projects such as roads, buildings, tunnels, bridges and wastewater systems are planned and executed. She joins mentor Mel Wright, a civil engineering technician from New Zealand's largest infrastructure consultancy, Opus International Consultants, to find out more about industry. First up Mel takes Lisa to the site of Auckland's north western motorway extension where she shows her one of the aspects of her job, taking soil nail tests and recording the results. This test is added to a set of data to give an impression of ground movement over a period of time. Next it's off to the Manukau Train Station for inspection to ensure the reinforcing on site matches the plans before concrete is poured. It's another aspect of Mel's job that takes her out and about to various project sites but she explains to Lisa that there is also plenty of structural draughting and design work she's involved with back in the office. The variety and challenge of solving problems and dealing with people on a daily basis is all part of what Mel enjoys about her job. Sam Wright has already had a taste of construction through a part time job so he's keen to find out more about what he would be doing in a role as a civil engineer. Christchurch company Isaac Construction is the perfect place to find out as it is involved in all aspects of infrastructure works, including construction, surfacing, bitumen products, transport and quarrying. In fact, the company is also internationally recognised for its construction of Peacock Springs on the outskirts of Christchurch, a quarry that has been transformed into a 1000ha wildlife habitat. As he is given an insight into some of the projects the company is involved with, Sam soon realises that there is plenty of variety and skill needed in the civil engineering world. Tenders need completing, costs need estimating, surveying needs to be done and throughout all processes, there's a large amount of communication required so everyone knows what they're working toward and what the timeframe is.
